The mega auction was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on the 24th and 25th of November 2024. The IPL mega auction is held once every three years and it allows all teams to pick their team members for the next three seasons. The 10 teams that were present for the auction were allowed to choose their preferred players from a total of 577 players, out of which 367 were Indian cricketers and the rest were overseas players.

Each team was given a budget of ₹120 crore to create a team of a minimum of 18 players and a maximum of 25 players for the upcoming IPL. Note that a maximum of eight overseas players were allowed in each team.

While Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player in the history of the IPL after he was acquired by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the 13-year-old cricketer from Bihar, rose to fame for being the youngest cricketer to be picked at the IPL mega auction. He was acquired by Rajasthan Royals for a whopping ₹1.1 crore.
